The Canon photo marathon organized by Metropolitan PhotoHub Pvt Ltd on behalf of Canon had an astounding participation with hundreds of photo enthusiasts making their way to the Park Street mews to try put their photographic skills to the test and win a week's photography tour to Japan.
From the participation of over 300 photographers and more than 600 anticipated photo submissions on the day, Ms. H. M. Thushara Sewwandi Abhayaratne emerged the winner in the open category and Thumbowil Acharige Vibuda as the winner in the student category. The grand prize in the open category was a fully paid photography learning trip to Japan together with a Canon EOS 6D professional DSLR camera.
In the student category T. T. B. G. Imbuldeniya was 1st runner up, and Supuni Prathibha Midipolawatta was placed 2nd runner up. In the open category, Dr. Asela Senanayake was 1st runner up and Mr. H. P. T. D. Bandara was 2nd runner up.
"Everyone who participated surprised us with the enthusiasm they showed by turning up in large numbers and participating in the true spirit of the competition," said Mr.Taslim Rahaman Managing Director of Metropolitan PhotoHub Pvt Ltd.
The event is a milestone in the Sri Lanka photography industry. Similar events have been organized in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia in previous years but this is the first time the event is being hosted by Sri Lanka.
A team of three independent judges selected the winning photographs. They are Ravindra Ranasinghe, Panduka de Silva and Henry Rajakaruna.
The event was supported by Ebert Silva Holidays - destination partner, Acer computers - IT partner and Seya Colour Dream Labo - photo printing partner.
Metropolitan PhotoHub have pioneered many events and promoted the growth of the photography industry and the tourism industry in Sri Lanka in the past. This event is another milestone in these initiatives and this time the beneficiaries wont only be the photography industry.
"We will be donating part of the registration fees to the blind school to develop brail text books for Advanced level students so Metropolitan or Canon is not making any profit from this initiative," he said.
